The Lullaby of the non-stop Superman

Dean Poling
The Valdosta Daily Times

The world stood still that day, but Superman had been moving ever since.

Until now, eight years later, he had to stop, if only for a moment. He landed on the moon and watched the Earth above. A man in blue watching a big blue ball.

Earth seemed so peaceful from the moon. Superman knew that looks can be deceiving. He watched the Earth and felt the unaccustomed dizziness of being still. The strange sensation of not moving after moving for so long.

Bullets bounced off of him. He could fly into the sun without a whimper. Yet, being still and watching his adopted planet found a vulnerable spot within his soul. Even a non-stop Superman cannot run from himself forever.

Superman wept.

Had he been on Earth, he would have literally cried a river. But Superman cried on the moon. With no gravity, his tears floated away from the moon and into space — as if the moon rained backwards from ground to sky.

Cried out, and the motion of still overcoming him, Superman fell asleep on the moon. The Earth as his night light overhead.
