Summer travel for Valdostans

More residents plan to go on cruises as far as Hawaii and Alaska

VALDOSTA — Summer is the time of relaxation and fun. Traveling is at its highest peak when the season arrives. Locals in the area are turning to cruises for relaxation and summer festivities.

South Georgia Travel president Jane Shelton said, “For summer travel, we have received calls for cruises and all-inclusive packages to the Caribbean. Alaska is always high on the radar for summer, as well as Hawaii. Additional requests have been for European destinations.”

Although cruises are gaining in popularity, the question remains, What is it about cruises that attracts locals?

According to princess.com, Caribbean cruises include a massive set of activities for visitors of various ages and backgrounds. Historical cities throughout the island are attractive to visitors who may want to experience a relaxing getaway.

What may make Hawaii an attractive destination for locals can possibly be their historical shows and culture. Travelers have an option of visiting several designated islands which can give them an insight into a culture that they have never experienced before.

According to Jaret Broomberg, owner of Executive Travel Services, “The cruise lines usually have Broadway-type productions or comedy acts. Some of the newest ships have zip-lines, rock climbing walls, wave simulators and amphitheaters for different shows.”

Travel agents say that cruises are great ways for locals to travel and enjoy themselves.

“Cruises are a very good value. You pay one price and your accommodations, meals and entertainment are included,” said Broomberg.

Both Broomberg and Shelton say that locals usually plan their destinations in advance. This making the months of January through May the busiest time for agents who are working with clients to find packages that fit their needs.

Although cruises are growing in popularity among locals, Shelton says that Italy has been growing as a close second for local customers. Shelton includes that Italy is the second most popular travel destination due to its growing popularity over the past few years. Many cruise ships leave for the Mediterranean from Rome and Venice. Shelton says for travelers looking to visit Italy, Rome is a smooth flight.

For family fun, Broomberg suggests that attractions for visitors to Valdosta are the Wild Adventures theme park, as well as the city’s historical districts and architecture. For travelers who enjoy golfing, Valdosta offers golf destinations along with popular shopping and dining options.

Shelton concludes, “Peach State Summer Theater, and Jump N Jacks for kids is certainly what draws the summer for families to Valdosta.”
