What will Santa bring you this year?

VALDOSTA — Christmas is two weeks from this Wednesday and it’s getting to be crunch time for shopping. Unless you have everything bought or ordered, for most of us, it seems like there are always a few last-minute gifts you have to buy, or all of your presents left to buy.

A friend asked me recently for a gift suggestion for his wife, a woman who supposedly already has everything. He was out of ideas and looking for inspiration. My advice? Give her what she wants. Men seem to think that women are much more complex than we really are. When a woman says she wants something — sometimes it’s outright, sometimes it’s a little more subtle — then get it for her. Some men always want gifts to be a complete surprise, but unless it’s a BMW with a big red bow or a trip to Hawaii, surprises aren’t always happy ones. Trust me. Give her what she wants and then buy a few things that are unexpected. And I don’t mean a Duck Dynasty chia pet. Unless she is a huge fan, but even then, she’d probably rather have Ms. Kay’s cookbook.

Hopefully you know your significant other well enough to buy the perfect gift, or at least know a friend or family member well enough to help you out, but if you get stuck for an idea, just ask. And ladies, remember it’s the thought that counts.

Business Roundup

Exciting news, especially for Lake Park residents — the new Kennedy’s Family Steakhouse opened on Highway 41 South this weekend. It’s located where the Tavern was for years, and offers a menu aimed for steak lovers in a family atmosphere. They’re open Thursday through Saturday at 5 p.m.

The downtown International Market has moved from the bottom floor of the Ashley House down the street. Where they used to be in the Ashley House is surrounded by scaffolding, so not sure what’s going in there next.

I’ve had several inquiries about the area on Norman Drive next to Goodwill and Chick-fil-A that is being developed. It’s been confusing because someone had tried to get the zoning changed not too long ago to put a carwash there, but I don’t believe their request went through. At any rate, I understand that it’s a dental clinic being built there.

The new Baytree Animal Hospital building on Baytree next to Black Crow really took shape over the last couple of weeks. Nice building. Still a ways from being complete.

I understand that the corner lot on Northside and North Patterson has sold or is in the process of being sold, but haven’t heard who’s going in there yet.

I also understand that Starbucks is looking for another location in town and hopefully we’ll have an announcement soon.

The parking lot and driveway for the new dollar store on North Valdosta Road was being worked on late last week. The building looks finished, so it shouldn’t be long before they open.

The new Mill Pizza Buffet going into the Remerton Mill Plaza off Baytree is a little behind schedule but nearing completion. They’re aiming to open right after the first of the new year.

Trying to find out what the new corner area in the North Ashley Professional area is going to be or if they are just clearing the property for future development.

Keeping an eye on current construction projects around town and hearing that several more are on the drawing board for sometime next year, which is always good news.

That’s it for this week, but if there’s something I missed, please let me know!
