Spring into fashion, not into debt!

SAVANNAH — The weather is getting warmer, which means you can no longer hide under coats and scarves, you actually have to put thought into your ensemble. Every season, I like to fill my closet with the latest trends, and unless you know how to do it on a budget, one complete outfit can cost as much as $200 or more. Here are some sure fire ways to nickel and dime your way into great spring fashion.

• Versatile shoes.

In addition to your repertoire of flip flops (as is customary in any southern gal’s closet), you only need to buy two pair of shoes this spring: Point-toed flats with an ankle strap and gentlemanly lace up oxfords.

• Pull that plaid out of storage!

Plaid is typically reserved for winter, but the pattern was all over the spring runway. There are great, trendy ways for you to repurpose this pattern to work for your spring wardrobe. Pair a plaid shirt with white cropped pants (after Easter of course), wear a plaid shirt with jean shorts, pair a heavy, plaid skirt with a short sleeve white or black tee, and more!

• The plain, white tee.

Almost every woman has a plain, white button up in her closet, and lucky you; it’s one of the pivotal pieces you need to complete your spring wardrobe. Pair it with a pair of jeans that you roll up to mid-shin, or even a pair of tailored shorts.

• Catch a clutch.

In addition to two pairs of versatile shoes, your only other investment piece will need to be a great clutch. During the spring, a clutch is appropriate at all hours of the day, not just for evening engagements. Try to find one that you will be able to match to a multitude of outfits. Personally, I use an ivory one and I have had it for two springs now.

• Say hello to hair!

A cheap way to stick to spring trends is with your hair. Right now, windswept, messy updos are really in, which means you won’t have to spend tons of time in front of the mirror or use a lot of product. Messy braids of any sort were also big on the runway.

• Overalls are no longer for yard work!

This is great news for all you ladies with country roots. Overalls are making a big comeback this season and there is so many ways you can wear them. Whether it’s casually with a tank top and sandals, or even more dressed up with a blouse and wedges.
