Thank a veteran tomorrow

VALDOSTA — Tomorrow is Veterans Day, a day to honor our nation’s men and women who have served their country. I wanted to be sure to add the “and women” part, because of something I saw recently about a female veteran who felt forgotten. We all should remember that women have served alongside of men for decades now in the various military branches so be sure to thank our female veterans tomorrow along with the men.

In addition to the various observations around the area in honor of Veterans Day tomorrow, there are also some perks for our nation’s military. A number of national chain restaurants and local ones as well are offering specials for military men and women tomorrow.

Outback, Red Lobster, Applebee’s, Chili’s, Denny’s, Little Caesar’s and Longhorn are on the list of national restaurants that have a location in Valdosta offering a variety of free items and discounts to veterans Monday. In addition, Mama June’s, Smok’n Pig and Ole Times are locally owned restaurants that are offering discounts tomorrow, too.

Be sure to take the time Monday to remember our nation’s veterans and if you know someone who served, try to make a point of thanking them for their service. And if you are a veteran, enjoy the day set aside in your honor.

Business Roundup

The newly renovated and renamed Two Friends is open. The popular restaurant in Summit Pointe is now the Friends Grille and Bar, and features the same favorite dishes along with some new items, an expanded wine and beer list, and a new look. Check it out.

I understand in addition to the new steak house getting ready to open on 41 South in Lake Park, there may be a new fast-food place or two at one of the exits down there soon.

The new ChiroCare Chiropractic Center held its grand opening last week and Southwest Georgia Bank also held the groundbreaking for its new commercial banking center, right next to the current main branch on North Valdosta Road and Country Club.

Still don’t know what happened to Hungry Howie’s but the pizza place is definitely closed and the building looks like it’s been emptied out.

According to the building permits, a brand-new Dollar General is being built in Hahira, but not sure if it’s the same site it’s on now or a new one.

Speaking of Hahira, a sad piece of history is being dismantled. The big red tobacco barn on Main Street is being taken apart. Not torn down, but literally taken apart. I’m sure it’s time, but it’s sad to see another historic structure go away.

I can’t believe it’s already Christmas, or so close to it that Santa will be coming to the mall next Saturday, Nov. 16. Santa’s arrival at 9 a.m. at the Valdosta Mall will be accompanied by a bit of magic, free milk and donut holes for the kids, a holiday fun pack, and of course, Santa will happily pose for photos.

It looks like our Sears may close. The Valdosta location is on a list of dozens of others being marketed by the company for sale. Some of the sites are already closed. I’ll keep an eye on it and let you know if there’s any movement.

That’s it for this week, but if there’s something I missed, please let me know!
