It’s Honey Bee time in Hahira!

VALDOSTA — Yes, it’s that wonderful time of year when the Honey Bee festival takes over the city of Hahira for a week of festivities.

For those of you new to the area, Hahira is known as the home of the honey bee as several businesses in the city produced and sold honey bees for pollination of crops. The businesses are no longer around, but the nickname lives on.

The 32nd Annual Hahira Honey Bee Festival kicks off officially tomorrow morning at the Community Center in town with a breakfast at 7 a.m.

On Tuesday, there is a Senior Walk at 8 a.m. beginning at the Community Center and Wednesday at the Center is a welcome reception from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All day Friday and Saturday, arts, crafts and food vendors will be set up around the downtown area selling their wares from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can find all sorts of delicious items that may knock you off your diet, but are worth it, plus some wonderful homemade baked goods and all kinds of arts and crafts.

On Saturday, you’ll also find entertainment at the stage behind the red caboose downtown. The 5K run starts at 8 a.m. at the Community Center, the dog show is at 10 a.m. on Marshall Street, and Kids Zone will be all day.

The highlight for many is Saturday at noon — the annual Honey Bee Parade. One of the largest parades in region, it always features lots of Shriners, who make the trip every year and entertain the crowds with their funny cars, along with the Lowndes High Bridgemen marching band, floats from various local organizations, lots of cars, tractors, trucks, motorcycles, horses, fire engines, and elected officials. It’s election time, so expect to see a few candidates in there as well.

And yes, they do throw candy!

Hahira is a delightful small community with a vital downtown area, lots of terrific people and nice places to shop. The Honey Bee event is a throwback to another time in many ways, but is a fun, family-oriented, old-fashioned small-town festival.
