Leadership Lowndes seeking nominations

VALDOSTA — I’ve been asked to help spread the word that Leadership Lowndes is currently seeking nominations for the Class of 2014. Class alumni can nominate or those who are interested are able to self nominate as well. The form is available at

This is a terrific organization and a wonderful opportunity for those who want to learn more about the community, network, and be introduced to numerous ways to get involved in making Lowndes County a terrific place to live. Alumni stay very connected to the organization, which is now close to 25 years old, and it’s a positive, gratifying experience for professionals new to the area as well as for those who may be from here but who could benefit from being exposed to aspects of the community they may not know.

I’m a proud alum and a past president, and had the pleasure, along with Assistant City Manager John Whitehead, of introducing community projects into the curriculum. In the last six years, more than $50,000 in donations and thousands of hours of time have been injected back into a number of area charities. The emphasis is on learning to give of yourself as opposed to simply writing a check, and the projects have had a tremendous impact on the organizations but also on the individuals, spurring many to become lifetime supporters.

Leadership Lowndes also introduced me to a number of people in town who have become lifelong friends, with a support network of individuals I can call on when needed.

If you can make the time commitment and you are serious about it, it’s well worth it, so if you haven’t experienced it yet, please consider having someone nominate you or nominating yourself. It will be one of the best years of your life.
