100 Black Men to dedicate house Saturday

VALDOSTA — Next Saturday, June 15, after you come by The Times office to have your photo taken for our Valdosta Scene model search, go to the 100 Black Men house on MLK Jr. Drive and take a tour of their new house from 9 a.m. to noon.

The organization saved the historic house from demolition and moved it to its new location, where they’ve spent about a year or so painting, repairing, remodeling, etc., to create a home for the group. They have a delightful sculpture that will also be dedicated Saturday that depicts a young scholar sitting on top of the world.

This is a wonderful group that does so much to help the youth of the community to improve themselves through tutoring, mentoring and SAT prep programs. They also sponsor terrific events each year, including the annual August barbecue, and numerous charitable acts as well.

The 100 Black Men is a national organization and the local Valdosta chapter is one of the best, recognized for their good works.

If you have a chance on Saturday, go see for yourself how a group of community members has taken something that no one wanted and turned it into a historic showpiece and a place where the community’s youth can receive the help they need to go on to college and improve their lives.

Side Note: Will the nice gentleman who keeps calling and not leaving any name or contact information please call me this week and do so? I’d like to have a chance to talk to you. Thanks!

Business Roundup

Good news this week for a few closed business locations. The first is that it really does look like Hooters is coming back, pretty for sure. Another is that the location that was the Hollywood Video on the corner of Baytree and Gornto is going to be a Lifeway Christian Store.

Also, it looks like the former China Garden on North Ashley Street has reopened again.

I’ll know more about this one next week, after I interview the company president, but Wild Wing Café plans to open a new location in Valdosta soon.

The building on North Valdosta Road near the other furniture stores is apparently also going to be a new furniture store. Still trying to track down more information.

There is going to be a new charitable thrift store opening soon in the Five Points strip center, where the Crate used to be, near the Carter and Sons produce outlet.

A reminder that the Red Door from downtown just moved this week to Mary Street.

That’s about it for this week but if there’s something I missed, please let me know!
