The Valdosta Daily Times
The February Valdosta Scene magazine is on newsstands now, with three delightful young ladies on the front cover, modeling fashions from several area boutiques for the annual Father Daughter dance next weekend.
Emery Turner, McKinley Anderson and Haley McPipkin were found in the Valdosta Scene model search conducted in 2012, and they were gracious enough to participate in this fashion shoot.
The Father Daughter dance locally, sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church, is the largest of its kind in the nation, with four dance times over two nights. It’s a terrific way to bring fathers and daughters together and to show young girls the importance of being treated well by the men in their lives.
Also featured in the February Scene are love stories from three couples in public service to our community. They are must-reads — entertaining, touching, and inspirational.
You’ll find my favorite dessert for Valentine’s Day, or any day, from Southern Landing, words of wisdom from our regular columnists, Mark Webb and Rhonda Tomlinson, and advice on vacationing in Las Vegas, along with the usual photos from recent events and more.
The Scene is available at Books-a-Million and The Times’ office on Troup Street. Read and enjoy!
Now that the new Drury Inn has had its large public opening event this week, that area, which was already extremely congested, is now even more so. The traffic light that will allow a back way out of the hotel and Olive Garden, etc., will be operational, according to the city, on Feb. 12, so be aware on St. Augustine in that area that you will soon have a new signal to pay attention to.
I said last week that Take Five is closing, but I had a great conversation with the owner this week, and they are changing the venue a bit but are not really closing. Take Five now has a large doorway cut through to Heidi’s Deli next door, and they are planning to make it more of a family-friendly venue, with family karaoke nights, a game area, and access to both Heidi’s and Sisters, with the ability to hold large group meetings or events. It’s a lovely place on West Hill Avenue so keep your eye on it!
There was a very large hiring event this week for Publix and the store is getting closer and closer to its grand opening. The last I heard officially, the store is expected to open around the beginning of March in the new location on Inner Perimeter.
Other stores are anticipated to open alongside it this spring and summer, including a second location for Nails by Chris.
The Egg and I construction is really heating up and the building facade looks really nice. The inside work should be starting soon, with a grand opening in April.
Small Cakes opened this week on North Oak Street Extension and I haven’t yet heard about the Chicken Salad Chick going in nearby. I’ll let you know next week.
And there is a new nail salon open near the Submarina off St. Augustine in the small strip center called Luxury Nails VIP.
That’s about it for this week, but if there’s something I missed, please let me know!
