On Friday, Aug. 1, there is a terrific way to spend your evening — with the Deen brothers, Bobby and Jamie. They will be back in Valdosta once again to host America’s Second Harvest of South Georgia’s Empty Bowls fundraiser at the conference center. Tickets for the fun filled evening are $40 and include dinner, the chance to bid on items including ceramic bowls made by local artists, and the opportunity to view live what you usually see on TV on the Food Network.
Originally, the two worked with their mother but became celebrities in their own right. I met Paula, Bobby and Jamie at the state capitol in 2003, right before her career — and subsequently theirs — really exploded. I understand they’ve never lost the humility and kindness they’ve always shown, which is why they’ve continued supporting this terrific local fundraiser for the food bank and the Kids Cafe.
Interested, aspiring chefs were encouraged to enter their recipe in the Empty Bowls contest, and that evening, a lucky winner will be called on stage to prepare their recipe with the Deens.
It’s a terrific event, a great way to spend an evening, and a wonderful way to help such a worthy cause raise much needed funds. For more information on tickets, call (229) 244-2678 or visit valdostafoodbank.org.

Business Roundup
The Tavern is re-opening! The restaurant and popular nightspot closed down a while back and is apparently opening in just a couple of weeks under new ownership.
The place where the 11-story office building is supposed to go on the corner of Roosevelt and Patterson has a sign pointing to Darby Bank’s new location in the house that was on the property, which was recently remodeled. Calls to find out what is happening with that development as well as North Oak Square went unanswered this week.
Across Patterson St., construction is underway on a big hole, as SGMC is putting in a large retention pond to catch all that storm water runoff from the surrounding area.
Rowe Air Conditioning has apparently moved from its former location on W. Gordon St. to a new location on N. Ashley St. across from Northside Snapper. The sign was going up this week.
There is a large new development getting ready to go in called Greyfield Villas, off N. Oak St. Extension beside the Northwind development and apartments.
There was a lot of work going on this week at the Smokin’ Pig restaurant on Old Highway 41 North, so they are edging closer to a late July/early August opening.
Good news for Valdosta. Starbucks released their official closing list, and Valdosta isn't on it. Bad news for Atlanta, though. Ten of their stores are on the list, including the one at the Georgia Aquarium, plus the Starbucks at the Mall of Georgia. Don't know yet if it's going to affect new store plans, though.
A lot of construction is still under way all around the city, but still a quiet week as a lot of folks are getting in last minute trips before school starts. So if there’s anything I missed, please let me know!
