Business This Week: Have you seen the June Scene?

By Kay Harris
The Valdosta Daily Times

Gracing the cover of the June Valdosta Scene magazine is the city’s most famous landmark, the Crescent. Chances are that even if you’re from here, you may not really know the history behind this graceful and elegant home. Most Valdostans tend to drive up and down Ashley and Patterson Street without taking the time to really look at all the local scenery. I realize it’s not all beautiful, but much of it truly is, if you just take the time to enjoy it.

In addition to the home’s history, there are accompanying photos from Wes Sewell of some of the beautiful weddings and events he has photographed there in recent years.

The theme for this month’s Scene is all about gracious, Southern living. Relaxing and enjoying life in the South, with tips for entertaining friends, throwing a swank summer party, and selecting the right wine for your gathering.

Other tips in the Scene include information and photos about easy day trips that can be taken from Valdosta around Georgia and Florida. You will also find a great historic piece on the former home of The Valdosta Daily Times at the corner of West Hill Avenue in a building that is long gone. Did you know back in the day before all the modern conveniences we now take for granted that reporters used to shout out scores, big news of the day, etc. from the second floor windows? Just one more thing replaced by the Internet.

Photos from recent events, recipes, a feature on Covington’s, relationship advice and much more can be found in the June Scene. Pick up a copy today at the Times office or Books-a-Million. Read and enjoy!

Take a Walk on the Northside!

Several businesses on Northside Drive are coming together this Saturday to have a joint Open House event. On June 13, you can shop in various stores on Northside and help raise money for a good cause. The merchants have selected the Georgia Sheriff’s Boys Ranch as its charitable recipient for the event, with the money collected going to help buy bookbags and school supplies.

There will be family activities, sales and more. Follow the Times this week for more information, including the stores participating in the Walk on the Northside event Saturday.

Business Roundup

It looks like there may be a new adult entertainment club opening on Bemiss where Peaches used to be. The problem is that since Peaches closed, the property has been annexed into the city and the rules have changed so that you can no longer have alcohol and nudity in the same venue, but at any rate, there is a sign on the property that says Club Diamond with a silhouette of a female form, like you might find on a trucker’s mud flap. The sign says it’s a “gentleman’s club” and is opening soon.

While we’re on Bemiss, there is a new Bemiss BBQ opening up where a pizza place used to be and another club is coming called Carol’s Country Club across from the fire station, sort of.

Also on Bemiss, the Elliano’s still doesn’t look like it’s opened yet.

Up the road a bit, quite a bit, all the way up to Nashville, there is a new gift shop that opened this week called the BriarBerry Gift Shop across the street from Harveys.
