Business This Week: Happy Mother's Day

The Valdosta Daily Times

I can remember as a child asking my mother why she and my dad got a day, but kids didn’t, and she always said, “That’s because every day is your day.”

I didn’t understand it then, but when I became a mother, it’s absolutely true. You do anything you have to do, whenever you have to do it, to ensure that your child is loved, cared for, and raised right. Every day is their day.

But for one day out of the year, your children think about you. Maybe it’s an attempt to bring you breakfast in bed, maybe it’s allowing you to see a movie with them (with a teenager, this is a big deal in my house), or maybe it’s making you something they make with their own hands that you will hold on to and cherish forever.

Spend the day wisely, and thank all those you know who are mothers and those who have treated you like they were your mother. Phone calls, flowers, notes, letters, an afternoon visit — just to say you are thinking about them. And thank them.

Business Roundup

Let’s get the bad news over with first. Bass Pro Shop is not coming to Valdosta. That doesn’t mean the James Road development won’t be done, it just means the developers are looking at some different alternatives. Fortunately for Valdosta, we are still considered a hot market, and we’ll do fine in attracting other retailers to the city. I’ll keep you posted.

The new location of the Hughston Clinic is holding its grand opening this week. They built a brand new, state-of-the-art facility in Camelot Crossing on Kings Way, and are moving from their current location on Patterson St. The celebration is scheduled for Tuesday.

Also holding a grand opening for their newest location is Anytime Fitness. They are opening one of their centers in the new St. Augustine Crossing shopping center on St. Augustine near the new Wooden Nickel in two weeks.

The Sonnys on Norman Drive is supposed to hopefully be re-opening on July 1.

There is a new store in the Miles Plaza on W. Hill Ave. called World Hi Fi Video and Appliance that just opened last week, down from Sisters Pizza and Heidi’s Deli.

I should have an interesting announcement in the next couple of weeks about a property that’s getting ready to be “re-used” for a new purpose, if it’s approved.

And the new Maryland Fried Chicken that’s taking the place of the former Shark’s Tail restaurant has repainted the building on N. Ashley St. and is currently renovating for an opening in the next few weeks.

Southeastern Federal Credit Union’s building has now gone vertical at the corner of Country Club and N. Valdosta Road.

The two new buildings at SGMC, the ambulatory surgery center and the medical office building, are both just about done.
