Tornado watches in effect for Lowndes, Brooks and Echols counties

VALDOSTA — A tornado watch and wind advisory are in effect for Lowndes and surrounding counties as severe weather is expected to begin this afternoon and last through the evening hours.

A tornado watch for Lowndes and Brooks counties has been extended until 11 p.m. tonight. A separate tornado watch has been issued for Echols County until 9 p.m. Echols is also under a significant weather advisory for high winds, strong thunderstorms and heavy rain until 7 p.m.

The National Weather Service is predicting severe thunderstorms throughout the afternoon and evening, with storms continuing through the day Tuesday and diminishing by Tuesday night.

The NWS also has issued a wind advisory, with steady winds at 20 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. Rainfall of 1 to 2 inches overnight is possible.
