Blazers catch fire
Held in check for six innings, the Valdosta State Blazers caught fire just in time Thursday evening.
Limited to just two runs by Wayne State ace Lyndsay Butler in their NCAA Division II national tournament opener, the Blazers rallied in the seventh and then won it two innings later 8-5 on a pair of huge Fran Johnson hits to advance into the winner’s bracket. VSU (46-14) will face the Dixie State at 6:30 p.m. today. The Red Storm beat the Savage Storm 3-2 in Thursday's late game.
Ultimate final exam
Once they beat Alabama-Huntsville and punched their return ticket to the NCAA Division II national tournament, the Valdosta State Blazers started doing their homework.
What the Blazers found was Wayne State has a stout pitching staff. And that top-ranked West Texas A&M and LIU Post have offenses that at least rival the firepower VSU possesses.
Albritton, Altman named NFCA All-Americans
The Valdosta State softball team was well-represented at the NCAA Division II National Championship Banquet on Wednesday night in Salem, Va., as both Courtney Albritton and Shelby Altman were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association first and second team All-Americans, respectively. Additionally, Albritton was presented the 2014 Elite 89 Award for the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament, an award presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.

The day started off on a sour note in Huntsville, Ala. for the Valdosta State softball team with a five inning, 9-1 loss to the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville in game one of a double header in the NCAA South Super Regional on Saturday. But the Blazers turned the tables in the second game of the day and rode a strong pitching effort by sophomore Caitlyn Calhoun to prevail in a 6-3 win, which earned the Blazers their third consecutive trip to the NCAA National Tournament.
