Meet the Blazers clinic held

VALDOSTA —  The Valdosta State Blazers held their second “Meet The Blazers” event Saturday at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

The event, which was open to the community, was sponsored by Southeastern Federal Credit Union.

Members of the entire Blazer football team, including coaching staff, cheerleading squad, Red Hots and the Blazin' Brigade marching band all played a part in the event, providing entertainment and fun stations for the children to enjoy.

Open to children from kindergarten to eighth grade, the event lasted three hours and had a plethora of events for the children and even parents to participate.

Registration began at 8 a.m. with registered students receiving a free shirt, a free hot dog and other goodies.

The overall environment was completely family friendly, with activities for children of all ages and even the parents themselves.

“I always bring out the whole family at events like this. It gives us a chance to meet our favorite players and have tons of fun,” said Hallie McDowell, a parent of three children at the event.

The Blazer football team assisted in running drills similar to ones they actually run in practice. Some of the drills included running routes, working on running the ball without being stripped, and even passing accuracy drills.

The Red Hots performed a short show for the crowd and took photos with children and fans. The Blazer cheerleaders also performed, showcasing a few lifts and their backflipping skills.

After a short break, the children were able to run out of the famed Blazer tunnel that the team exits before every home game. Set up like game day, the band played a fanfare and the cheerleaders did cheers while the lucky children ran onto the field.

To end the event, the Red Hots and football team all sat at various tables to sign autographs for the children and fans.

The event was beneficial to both the fans and the players, as the event was a way for some players to give back to the community.

“I always enjoy doing ‘Meet the Blazers’ because I get to make an impact on the youth in the community,” said Blazer receiver Regginald Lewis.

The Blazer soccer team will host its “Meet the Blazers” event, 6 p.m. Monday at the soccer stadium.
