VSU’s DeMasi signs with Cleveland

After getting drafted a week ago, Valdosta State’s Dominic DeMasi was “just looking forward to playing ball again.”

The right-handed pitcher has since decided to do that for the Cleveland organization, signing Friday with the Indians who took him with the 938th overall pick of the Major League Baseball draft June 7 in the 31st round. That evening DeMasi said he was still waiting to talk to Cleveland officials as well as his family before deciding whether to begin his professional career or return to Valdosta State for his senior season.

But DeMasi, who was unavailable for comment since signing, has chosen to end his Blazers’ career. In his junior campaign, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound DeMasi was a workhorse for Valdosta State, throwing a team-high 80 2-3 innings with a team-low 2.79 ERA. He threw three complete games, including two shutouts, and struck out 77 hitters, holding opponents to a .216 average against.

DeMasi, who also punted for the VSU football team, appeared in 17 games as a sophomore, with a 3.73 ERA in 41 innings and posted a 3.38 ERA with a .211 average against in 10 games as a freshman in 2012.

It was expected that if DeMasi chose to sign with the Indians that he would report to the organization’s rookie league team in Goodyear, Ariz.
