Albritton sets VSU record in victory

Valdosta State’s Courtney Albritton made history Sunday.

One day after West Georgia senior Nicole Yancey set a new Gulf South Conference record for career home runs, Albritton broke the Blazers’ career mark in No. 24 VSU’s 7-1 win against the Wolves in Carrollton.

Albritton, a junior, blasted her 57th career home run to open the fourth inning and gave the Blazers a 2-1 lead. That put her one home run behind Yancey and tied with former Alabama-Huntsville star Stephanie Pinto, while surpassing the number Marti Littlefield set from 2009-12. It was also Albritton’s 21st of the season, a new season high for the two-time GSC Player of the Year.

“Ever since my freshman year, besides coach (Thomas) Macera, Marti has had the most influence on me as an all-around player and especially as a hitter,” Albritton said in a school release. “Her encouragement, eye for hitting, and example on the field has given me a whole new mindset in the box over the last three years. I feel blessed to have been given the chance to not only play with her, but also for her.”

Armed with the lead, VSU added two more in the inning on a Chelsea Canara single. The freshman later added a home run as the Blazers finished off the series sweep, improving to 36-12 and 16-9 in the conference.

Valdosta State, which got a complete game three-hit performance from Brianna Hancock in the circle where she struck out seven, hosts Lee in the final GSC series of the season with a 5 p.m. doubleheader Friday and a 1 p.m. finale Saturday.
