Men's tennis clips the Shorter Hawks, 6-1

VALDOSTA — The Valdosta State Blazers took care of business against the Shorter Hawks with a short 6-1 win in Gulf South Conference men's tennis action on Saturday morning at The Blazer Tennis Courts.

The No. 13 Blazers are now 5-2 in GSC play on the year, and Saturday's win pushed their overall record to 11-6. Following the loss for Shorter, the Hawks fell to 3-17 overall and 1-6 against league opponents.

Valdosta State got off to a great start in doubles action, as they took a 2-1 lead in the match thanks to an 8-0 win for Mario Navarro Bayo and Gereon Heitmann at No. 2 over Shorter's Eric Heglund and Louis Tourtois. The second point for the Blazers came at No. 3 after Francisco Yim Kim teamed up with Andrew Harvin for an 8-1 win over Robert Watson and Cody Carr.

Navarro Bayo continued his strong day in singles action with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win against Tourtois at No. 2.

The Blazers held momentum with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win for Joachim Schemm at No. 4 over Watson, before Jasyk blew by Carr at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Harvin capped off the day and cut the match short when he defeated Heglund 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

Heitmann and Yim Kim both led at No. 1 and No. 3 singles before the match was finalized when the Blazers took the 6-1 lead.

The only blemish on an otherwise perfect day for VSU came at No. 1 doubles, when Tammo Haake and Sebastian Jasyk fell 8-4 to Marc Guerry and Arturo Lifshitz.

Next up for tennis is a make-up contest on Wednesday in Montgomery, Ala. against Christian Brothers to close out regular season play.
