VSU volleyball stops Chargers with 3-0 win in Huntsville

Huntsville — Valdosta State started a weekend series of conference matches off on the right foot when they defeated Alabama-Huntsville 3-0 on Friday night.

The win improved the Blazers to 15-8 overall on the season and 7-3 in the Gulf South Conference standings, which is good for second place in the league as the team enters the final stretch of the season.

Huntsville fell to 7-15 overall, 4-6 in league play after the loss. The Blazers are now 2-0 vs. the Chargers this season.

In the first frame of the contest, the Blazers fell behind early but reclaimed a 7-6 lead and never trailed again, closing out the set with a 25-22 advantage.

Valdosta State continued momentum throughout the match and took the second and third sets 25-21 and 25-23 to seal the victory.

A balanced attack from Valdosta State was highlighted by the efficiency of Lelalelei Nomura, who finished the contest with 11 kills in 24 attempts against only one error. Her performance was good for a .417 hitting percentage on the night, which led the team.

Jenna Kirkwood, who currently leads the GSC in kills this season, continued her great work offensively, powering out a team high 14 kills in the contest, while Jessica Codato swung for a .636 percentage with seven kills and 31 assists.

Kelsey Hedman and Destiny Berry pitched in with four and five kills, respectively, and Ashley Lala delivered four kills and six assists.

Standouts for the Blazers on defense for Valdosta State were Hedman, Berry and Kirkwood, who combined for 11 blocks to soften the Chargers' attack.

The Blazers finish off their month long road trip against North Alabama in Florence, Ala. tomorrow with a scheduled start of 2 p.m., before returning home for the first time this month to host West Alabama on Oct. 29.
