VSU women win regular-season finale

The Valdosta State women's basketball team finished regular season play on a high note with a gritty 50-44 win against Christian Brothers in Gulf South Conference basketball action at Canale Arena in Memphis, Tenn., on Saturday.

"I was really proud of our team today," said VSU coach Kiley Hill. "With injuries and a flu bug hitting us hard, these young ladies responded with a tremendous effort on the defensive end and found a way offensively. It was wonderful to see us play with confidence."

Amy Duke, who finished just short of her second double-double in a two week span, carried the load offensively with a 15-point effort. The Tennessee native also pulled down nine boards.

It was a see-saw affair throughout the first half, which ultimately resulted in a 30-27 VSU advantage at halftime.

The score was tied at the 9:38 mark when Duke drilled a 3-pointer to give the Blazers the lead. The shot ignited an 8-0 run the next seven minutes, as the Blazer defense shut down Christian Brothers to help put the game out of reach.

Valdosta State improved to 12-14 overall, 7-14 in GSC play, while Christian Brothers wrapped up the regular season with a 15-12 record overall, 10-10 in GSC play.

The Bucs (16-11, 12-8) never trailed in the game as they scored the contest's first 19 points. After starting the game by making only one of its first four field goal attempts, CBU heated up by making its five attempts. Meanwhile, Valdosta State (15-11, 9-11) missed its first fives shots and committed three turnovers during the first five minutes of the game before finally scoring on a Larry Stone jumper in the paint with 14:58 to go in the first half.

Blake Justice led the Blazers with 19 points, while Jeremy McKay had 18 and Stone had 16.
