Nick Fogarty named Division II Pitcher of the Week

VSU left-hander pitched a perfect game vs. Paine

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State’s Nick Fogarty has been chosen the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Division II Pitcher of the Week.

Fogarty earned the award after pitching a perfect game against Paine College last Saturday at Billy Grant Field.

On Saturday, pitching the second game of a doubleheader, Fogarty was brilliant. He faced 21 batters in the seven-inning game, and retired all 21 of them. He struck out nine batters, got seven batters to fly out and recorded five ground ball outs. The Blazers won the game 12-0.

“It is overwhelming, really,” Fogarty said after the game. “You never expect to do it. You never go out thinking you are going to do it. Then it just happens. In the fifth inning, I thought to myself, “Wow, I’ve really been cruising. I need to keep bearing down.’

“It is crazy. I never thought it would happen to me. It is overwhelming. I am speechless at this point.”

A perfect game is one of the most elusive accomplishments in baseball. Fogarty’s perfect game was just the second in VSU’s 58-year history, and the fifth in Gulf South Conference history.

It was Fogarty’s second dominant performance in two starts this year. In his first start of the season, he pitched six shutout innings against Lynn. He struck out a career-high 12 batters and allowed just two hits.

Fogarty currently has a 2-0 record and a 0.00 earned run average this season. He has struck out 21 batters in 13 innings, and has held opposing batters to a .049 batting average.

Valdosta State is 5-2 after seven games. Fogarty and the Blazers will travel to Columbia, S.C. this weekend to face Benedict.
