The No. 4 Valdosta State baseball team will now have to wait until Wednesday to try to snap its first losing streak.
The Blazers, who opened the year 10-0, lost both games of its Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday in a showdown with No. 2 West Florida. The Argonauts won 5-1 and 3-2, rallying from early holes in both games. Sunday's series finale was canceled due to inclement weather in Pensacola, Fla.
VSU, which is now 3-2 in the GSC and 10-2 overall, travels to Americus to face Georgia Southwestern in a 5 p.m. game Wednesday. The Blazers, stuck in a four-way tie for second heading into Sunday's games in the conference, two games behind West Florida, host Delta State in a GSC series at Billy Grant Field next weekend. The Statesmen, part of that second-place tie and 4-4 overall, visit in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
The VSU softball team also had its series finale canceled Sunday at West Florida. The Blazers are 12-6 overall and 2-3 in the GSC following a split in Saturday's doubleheader with the Argos winning 6-2 in Game 1 before Valdosta State rallied for a 10-6 win in the nightcap.
The No. 19 Blazers are in a four-way tie for fifth in the conference, sitting 2 ½ games behind conference-leading Shorter. VSU travels to Albany State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday before hosting Delta State in a GSC series next weekend at Steel's Diamond. DSU is 2-4 in the conference and 8-9 overall.
