Blazers’ Fears earns GSC Player of the Week award

For most of the season, Valdosta State shortstop Mike Reed has led the Gulf South Conference in hitting.

However, Blazers second baseman Matthew Fears has now supplanted him atop the league leaders, while also joining him as a conference weekly winner. Fears was named the GSC’s Player of the Week on Tuesday after hitting .455 last week in leading Valdosta State to a 3-2 mark. Reed won the honor in back-to-back weeks earlier this season.

Fears, a senior, had 10 hits in 22 at-bats a week ago, hitting four doubles for a .636 slugging percentage. Adding in two walks, he reached base 50 percent of his plate appearances and didn’t strike out. The preseason all-conference performer scored four runs, drove in five more and swiped one bag.

Fears is now hitting a team- and league-best .400 with 32 runs scored and 20 RBIs. He has 12 doubles, a triple and a home run among his 48 hits and has successfully stolen a base on 11-of-14 attempts. In addition to batting average, he currently ranks among the Top 10 in the conference in slugging percentage (third), on-base percentage (third), runs scored (second), hits (first), doubles (second), triples (fifth), total bases (fifth) and stolen bases (sixth).

He will look to build off that big week today at 5 p.m. when the Blazers host Flagler at Billy Grant Field in a non-conference game. VSU then hosts Alabama-Huntsville this weekend in a three-game series.
