Former Blazer football players showcase their talent at NFL Pro Day

VALDOSTA —

NFL scouts from across the country gathered on the field house practice field at Valdosta State University on Monday to watch former Blazer football players showcase their talent, skill and work ethic on the gridiron. Scouts from the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and 10 other identified team scouts looked on closely at the talented pool of players who participated.
“This is the second straight year we’ve had a lot of NFL teams to show up. We had a good crowd, and a good number of scouts,” said Valdosta State coach David Dean. “It shows a lot about our players in the programs whose work ethic has allowed them to gain the interest of NFL scouts.”
In addition to former Valdosta State players were a select few other Division II players from Albany State, West Georgia, North Alabama and Fort Valley State, as the players participated in numerous drills. Beginning with the 40-yard dash, the players transitioned into the short and long shuttles, cone drills, suicides and concluded with players doing individual position drills.
“I thought my players did very well. I was real impressed with some of the 40-yard dash times, especially with the weather. I think they all tested well and opened some eyes,” said Dean.
“We had some guys from other schools come participate also. We are the only Division II school in Georgia that has a Pro Day. It means a lot to have other schools send students to our Pro Day because they know that we have one."
While official times for players 40-yard dash performances were unavailable due to scout privacy, several Blazers impressed with good unofficial times. Receiver Gerald Ford ran a blazing 4.57, while cornerback Dominique Wheeler impressed multiple scouts running a 4.47. Defensive tackle Lawrence Virgil clocked a 4.84 in his 40-yard dash attempt, while safety Lance Holder added to the speedy secondary showcase with a 4.6.
