Championship Blazers get national TV time

VALDOSTA — Great news for Valdosta State Blazer fans everywhere. The reigning Division II National Champion Blazers will play three out of 10 regular season games on the national scale via television.

The games will be televised as part of the Gulf South Conference “Game of the Week” package, as recently announced by the conference office.

The Blazers come into this season tied for first in the polls. Many players on the Blazer team, are excited to have the chance to repeat as champions this season.

“I’m excited about getting back to football and hopefully winning another championship,” said starting receiver Seantavious Jones. Jones is one of many players who has taken advantage of strength and conditioning coach Michael Doscher’s off-season conditioning program to have players in tip-top shape for the season.

Two of the televised bouts will come on the Blazers’ home field at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. Both of the home games will be against non-conference opponents that will hopefully bring in big ratings.

The first game to be played live on television will be the Blazers contest against Angelo State at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28. This game will be televised on Cox Sports TV.

Valdosta State’s other televised game will arguably be one of the most important games of the season for the entire Gulf South Conference.

The Game of the Week will feature the Blazers going head to head against the West Alabama Tigers. Both teams begin the season tied for favorites to win the national championship. The teams will face off, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in Livingston, Ala.

“They (the Tigers) are a tough team to play, especially on their home turf. We are going into the season with a goal and we will achieve it,” said Blazer Head Coach David Dean.

The Blazers will also have the regular season home finale against UNC Pembroke broadcast on TV. The game was originally set to be played on Saturday, Nov. 9, but will now be played 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7.

EPSN has not yet released their TV coverage schedule just yet, but there may be one or two of these games that will make it onto ESPN broadcasts.

The Blazers begin the 2013 season, 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. The team will travel to Henderson Field in Macon for a tough game against Fort Valley State.
