VSU women aim to cool off Lee

VALDOSTA —  Playing their third straight home game following the postponement of Tuesday’s game at West Florida, the Valdosta State women’s basketball team will try to cool off the Lee Flames at 6 p.m. today at The Complex.

Lee has won five straight Gulf South Conference games as the Flames enter 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the GSC. Lee topped VSU (9-7, 4-6) 69-44 on Dec. 19.

Hollie German is the Flames’ top threat as she leads the conference with a 25.1 points per game average, including 26  against Shorter a week ago to help Lee escape with a 53-49 win. Jenna Adams adds 16.2 points per game for Lee.

While the Flames enter on a hot streak, the Blazers went just 3-5 in January and dropped their first two games on the current homestand, 65-61 to conference-leading Delta State on Jan. 23 and 67-60 to Christian Brothers a week ago.

April Thomas continues to lead Valdosta State off the bench with her 15.5 average. Kourtnee Williams adds 8.3 points per game, including a team-high 17 against the Bucs.

While the VSU women enter on a losing skid, the Valdosta State men’s basketball team blasted Christian Brothers last Saturday behind the exploits of GSC Player of the Week David Murray. The senior forward pumped in 32 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the win as he has averaged 18.3 points over the past four games. For the season, Murray is averaging 12.8 points and 9.8 rebounds.

Other key contributors for the Blazers, who are 11-5 and 5-5 in the Gulf South, include junior guard Jalen Crawford, who leads VSU with 14.3 points per game. Fellow guards Blake Justice (14.1) and Jeremy McKay (13.1) also average in double figures.

Lee, though, has dropped seven of its past eight games to fall to 7-9 overall and 3-7 in the GSC. The Flames are paced by Cory Billingsley, who is scoring 19.1 points per game and has hit 25 of 59 on 3-pointers and has made 93 of 105 from the free throw line. Tyquan Roberts is the only other Flame in double figures with an 11.6 average off the bench.
