Hall of Fame tickets on sale

VALDOSTA — Tickets for the 2014 Valdosta State Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet are now on sale.

The 2014 Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet will be held Saturday, February 1 at Noon in the Ballroom of the Student Union. Seven former student-athletes, one administrator and one booster will enter the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014, making the class the largest in the 18 year history of the Hall of Fame.

Tickets, which cost $25, for the Hall of Fame can be purchased online here or by calling 229-259-2512.

The seven inductees include:

Softball's Alex Acosta: A member of the 2007 and 2008 Blazer softball teams, Acosta earned All-America honors both seasons she played for VSU. She led Valdosta State with a .360 batting average in 2007 while earning GSC East Player of the Year honors and had 12 home runs and 61 RBI that season while scoring 43 runs. Acosta was also the GSC East Player of the Year as a senior in 2008 during which she batted .376 with 13 home runs, 64 RBI and 52 runs scored. On her career, Acosta batted .369 and had 25 home runs, 125 runs batted in and 95 runs scored and earned Academic All-America honors both years.

Men's Basketball's Kenny Alston: A star for the Blazers from 1971 through 1975, Alston played in 77 career games and scored 1,446 career points, the 10th most in school history. He averaged 18.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game for his career. Alston averaged 15.7 points and 11.7 rebounds as a freshman, 15.4 points and 11.5 rebounds as a sophomore, 23.5 points and 8.2 rebounds as a junior and 24.6 points and 10.9 rebounds as a senior and owned a career field goal percentage of 52.3 percent. His 18.8 points per game ranks third-best all-time at Valdosta State.

Baseball's Wayne Fugett: Fugett was a four-year letterwinner and two-time All-America as he starred for the Blazers 1980 through 1983. Wayne finished his career with a .335 career batting average. He batted .379 with 13 doubles, a triple and 10 home runs as well as 46 runs scored and 57 driven in while earning All-America honors in 1983. Wayne also earned All-American status in 1982 after batting .340 with 13 doubles, two triples and 15 home runs to go along with 55 runs scored and 67 RBI.

    Another round, another first-place finish for Valdosta State’s Courtney Albritton.
    Albritton, the Blazers’ junior softball standout, was the leading vote-getter in the semifinal round of the NCAA’s Favorite Elite 89 winner contest with 1,483 votes in the two-day semifinal round that included 30 athletes. In the week-long first round, Albritton racked up 1,971 votes to lead the 89-person field.
