Roper to coach Blazers’ QBs

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State has added an assistant coach to its staff, but it isn’t to fill Seth Wallace’s role.

Former Oregon quarterback and University of Findlay running backs coach Justin Roper has been hired as the Blazers’ quarterbacks coach.

VSU hasn’t announced the hire with head coach David Dean out of town. However, Roper made the announcement on his Twitter account.

“I'll be coaching Quarterbacks at Valdosta State this year. Much thanks to the people at Findlay. Excited to be part of VSU. Go Blazers!,” Roper tweeted Thursday.

Roper, who is from Buford, played collegiately at Oregon and Montana. In his senior season, he threw for 1,885 yards and 19 touchdowns with the Grizzlies. While with the Ducks, he tied a Sun Bowl record with four touchdown passes in a 56-21 win against South Florida in 2007.

Prior to joining the Findlay staff in March 2013, Roper played professionally for the Orlando Predators and Chicago Rush with the Arena Football League.

At Valdosta State, Roper will replace Adam Froman, who spent one year on the Blazers’ staff. Froman, who played quarterback for Louisville, left VSU in May to work for XoS Digital, a national recruiting service.

Valdosta State still has to replace Wallace, its former defensive coordinator that left last month to join the staff at Iowa. Wallace, who also coached defensive line last season, was in charge of defensive backs during the spring after also coaching the secondary his first four years at VSU. Dwight Smith has been hired to coach the Blazers’ defensive line.
