New foe invades Bazemore-Hyder Stadium on Senior Day

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State faces UNC-Pembroke for the first time in school history as the Blazers and Braves face-off on television at 7:30 p.m. tonight. VSU will honor 17 seniors prior to the game, which is the final Valdosta State home game of the season.

Valdosta State, ranked No. 10 in the Super Region 2 rankings, is averaging 36.6 points and 442.2 yards of total offense per game, including 193.4 rushing and 248.8 passing.

The Blazers are led by sophomore running backs Cedric O'Neal and Austin Scott, who have combined to rush for 1,311 yards and nine touchdowns on the year.

Quarterback Cayden Cochran has passed for 1,369 yards and 11 scores while a balanced receiving corps features four receivers with at least 30 catches on the year, led by Seantavius Jones, who has 42 receptions for 603 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Defensively, the Black Swarm surrenders 29.6 points and 423.9 yards a game.

Linebackers Chris Pope, who needs just five more tackles to move into a tie for Valdosta State's career record, and Jeremy Grable lead the unit with 83 and 63 tackles, respectively, while fellow linebacker Justin Williams has 62 tackles, including a team-best 7.0 tackles for loss.

The Blazer defense has tallied 16 sacks on the year while creating 18 turnovers.

UNC-Pembroke, which is the third-ranked team in the Super Region 2 poll, has rushed for 895 yards and passed for 2,556 through its first eight contests while averaging 431.4 points a game.

Senior quarterback Luke Charles has passed for 2,520 yards and 22 touchdowns while freshman running back Rontonio has a team-high 372 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

Seven different Braves have caught at least 10 passes on the year, led by senior Te'vell Williams, who has 52 catches for 636 yards and seven touchdowns.

The UNCP defense surrenders 21.5 points and 360.8 yards of total offense each game, including 104.6 on the ground and 256.1 through the air.

Senior linebacker Fred Williams has a team-high 69 tackles, including 8.0 for loss, for a defense that has recorded 21 sacks and 16 turnovers on the

season.

In the week-long first round, Albritton racked up 1,971 votes to lead the 89-person field.
