Holcomb, Blazers shut down Wolves, win game one

VALDOSTA — Jeremy Holcomb allowed just four hits over eight innings of work to lead Valdosta State to a 7-0 victory over West Georgia in Gulf South Conference baseball action at Billy Grant Field Friday evening.

Holcomb walked three and struck out one on the night as he upped his record to 5-2.

He did not allow a runner past second base. Only twice, in the seventh and eighth innings, did West Georgia (18-13, 7-5) get two base runners on in an inning. The shutout was the seventh of the year for Valdosta State (15-11, 4-6).

Matthew Fears opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as he hit the second pitch he saw from Wolf starter Jonathan Black (3-2) over the wall in left for a 1-0 VSU lead.

Michael Gouge doubled to open the bottom of the second and moved to second on a balk before scoring on a Ryan McClellan sacrifice fly to push the Blazer advantage to two runs before adding two runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Bryant Hayman walked to open the third inning and before Jake Fields singled up the middle and moved to second as West Georgia tried to throw Hayman out at third. Cooper Lemonds collected the third straight single to score Hayman while Fields scored on a Gouge sacrifice fly to push the Blazer advantage to 4-0.

Hayman and Fields also scored in the fourth inning as Hayman was hit by a pitch and scored on a Lemonds single while Fields singled and scored when Will Wilson, who pinch ran for Lemonds, was caught in a run down on a stolen base attempt.

Hayman pushed the Valdosta State lead to 7-0 in the sixth as his two-out double scored Fears.

Fears was 3-for-5 with two runs scored to lead Valdosta State offensively while Hayman, Fields and Lemonds each had two hits.

The series concludes with a doubleheader today, beginning at 1 p.m.
