VSU Soccer Makes History, Top 25 Nationally

VALDOSTA — The VSU soccer team made history on Tuesday after landing a spot in the top 25 of the NSCAA Coaches Poll for the first time since the launch of the program in 2011, as released by the NCAA this week.

VSU head coach Mel Heinz believes that hard work is the key to everything the Blazers have been able to accomplish.

“From day one this has been a hard working group, a hard working team and staff,” said head coach Mel Heinz. “This is our third season in the program and every year we always work hard to achieve more and do more. They work hard in the offseason and then they work really hard in-season to win every game and do the best they can.”

The announcement comes on the heels of a strong opening weekend for Valdosta State in which they defeated Florida Southern 1-0 in the season opener on Friday night.

The Blazers followed that victory with another win, this time in a convincing fashion, 3-0 over the Panthers of Florida Tech on Sunday afternoon.

“Fortunately, our first weekend we opened up with two strong teams and I guess it was enough respect to put us in the Top 25,” said Heinz. “We’re thrilled.”

Valdosta State joins conference rivals and defending National Champions West Florida in the rankings, who remain atop the rankings at the number one spot.

Gulf South Conference Defender of the Week, the Blazer’s Olivia Mills will lead her squad into conference play beginning this Friday night at The Soccer

Complex.

VSU made it to the Georgia South Conference championship game in the first year of the soccer program.

The Blazers made it to the first round of the NCAA tournament before being bounced a season ago.

“We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, but we aren’t satisfied. That’s become our motto in a sense. We want more.”

Don't miss the No. 25 ranked Blazers in action as they host Union at 5 p.m. on Friday. Tickets will be available at the gate, or you can call 333-SEAT to order season tickets now!
