Lady Blazers fall to UWF in GSC finals

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Ninth-ranked West Florida blanked Valdosta State 5-0 to win the Gulf South Conference women’s tennis championship on Sunday morning at Lagoon Park.

The Lady Argonauts swept through doubles play to grab an early lead. Nina Bubelova and Fernanda Amaral opened the scoring with an 8-1 win over Jennifer Rink and Jessica Tuggle at No. 3 doubles. Monika Kochanova and Giovana Patitucci won by the same score over Michelle Fischer and Julianna Boehm at No. 1 doubles. Luiza and Mariana Sonnervig closed out doubles with an 8-3 victory over Alina Nagel and Laura Ubeda at No. 2.

Luiza Sonnervig put UWF on the verge of victory with a 6-2, 6-0 victor over Nagel at No. 2 singles. Patitucci closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Boehm at No. 5.

It was the third straight Gulf South Conference crown for the West Florida women. West Florida’s men also won the GSC title, defeating West Alabama 5-1. West Florida head coach Derrick Racine is a former Valdosta State tennis player.

The VSU women had reached the finals with a pair of wins on Saturday. They beat West Georgia 5-1 in the first round, then knocked off North Alabama 5-1 in the semifinals.

Valdosta State will now await word if it will advance to the NCAA South Region Tournament.
