As authorities moved a step closer to solving one southside shooting Friday, another investigation opened.
At 1:30 a.m., a 19-year-old Valdosta resident was shot while outside the former American Legion at 427 S. Lee Street. Based on a sign posted out front, the building is now home to Club 503.
Valdosta Police Capt. Bobbi McGraw reported that the victim sustained “a gunshot wound to the lower body while outside in the parking lot ...”
The victim’s wound was not life-threatening, and he was treated at and released from South Georgia Medical Center.
“Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots in the parking area,” McGraw continued.
One vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, which was parked in the parking lot, reportedly sustained some minor damage from a gunshot. Other than the victim, no other persons were injured.
“Currently,” McGraw reported, “(Valdosta Police) detectives are following leads on the case and talking with witnesses in efforts to identify the offender. Police are also working on discovering the motive of the shooting.”
Later Friday, authorities arrested two individuals wanted in connection with a June 25 shooting at the same location. That incident occurred at 2 a.m. and reportedly involved someone firing shots into a crowd arguing outside the building.
One victim was struck in the hand and another in the foot, according to an earlier Valdosta Police Department report. Stray bullets also damaged several parked cars in the area.
McGraw reported that a 15-year-old juvenile and Rahmann Kates, 20, of Valdosta are both charged with two counts of aggravated assault and a count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The juvenile is in custody at the Regional Youth Detention Center in Thomasville.
Kates is in the Lowndes County Jail.
