The stricken aircraft carrier USS Hornet lies dead in the waters after a morning attack by Japanese warplanes during the Battle of Santa Cruz in the South Pacific on Oct. 26, 1942, during World War II. Crewmen can be seen along the far rail as a U.S. destroyer floats at the side of the ship. The bomb hole is visible in the rear flight deck at left.
